What are the common faults with the Ford DPS6 PowerShift?
The DPS6 is known for clutch shudder at low speeds (particularly in stop-go traffic), delayed or harsh engagement from rest, and in some cases complete clutch pack failure. These issues often stem from worn clutch seals, contaminated fluid, or failed solenoids. A full rebuild kit addresses the root causes.
Does the DPS6 require special fluid?
Yes. The DPS6 uses Ford-specified dual-clutch transmission fluid (MERCON LV or the latest Ford-approved equivalent). Using the wrong fluid will accelerate clutch wear and cause shift quality deterioration. Always flush and refill with the correct fluid when rebuilding.
Can the DPS6 clutch be replaced without removing the gearbox?
No. Clutch replacement on the DPS6 requires removal of the transmission from the vehicle. The dry clutch packs are integral to the gearbox and cannot be serviced in situ. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
