What the rear differential does on the D-Max

The Isuzu D-Max is a body-on-frame (ladder-chassis) pickup with a conventional rear axle. Drive leaves the gearbox, runs down the propshaft, and enters the rear differential, where a hypoid crownwheel-and-pinion set turns the drive through 90 degrees and splits it between the two rear wheels. The pinion and the differential carrier each run on tapered roller bearings, set up with a precise preload so everything stays rigid under load. Over high mileage — and especially where the diff oil has degraded, run low, or picked up water — those bearings wear on their rollers and races. Once the surface finish breaks down, the bearing gets noisy under load and only travels in one direction from there.

Which vehicles are affected

The risk in leaving it is that a worn bearing lets the pinion and crownwheel drift out of their designed mesh — and once the gear teeth are chipped or worn, a bearing-level repair is no longer on the table and you are into a much bigger bill.

Why there is no fault code for this

Unlike a gearbox or a Haldex coupling, the rear differential on a D-Max is a purely mechanical unit — there are no sensors inside it and no control module watching the bearings for wear. That means a diagnostic scan will not flag a worn diff bearing, and there is no "rear diff bearing" trouble code to look up. If a scan does show codes at the same time, they are almost always unrelated to the noise. This fault is diagnosed the traditional way: by ear on a road test, by listening for how the noise changes on and off the throttle, and by physical inspection on the lift. That is a feature of the job, not a shortcut around it — it means honest, hands-on diagnosis matters more here than anywhere.

Is it the diff, a wheel bearing, or the tyres?

This is the classic mix-up, and it is worth ruling out properly before any parts are ordered. Coarse or unevenly worn rear tyres and failing wheel bearings both produce a similar speed-related drone. In the workshop we tell them apart by listening on load change, checking each wheel bearing for play and roughness, inspecting the tyres, and where necessary running the truck on the lift to isolate exactly where the noise is coming from.
