Model overview
(years & special editions)
The Corsa D VXR (Vauxhall; Opel Corsa OPC) launched in the UK in 2007 and ran through the end of the D generation in 2014. Power came from a 1.6-litre turbo four (early Z16LER, later A16LER after the facelift). Notable editions include:
- VXR Arctic Edition (2008) — limited edition with Remus sports exhaust and styling tweaks.
- VXR Nürburgring Edition (2011) — 205 PS, 250–280 Nm, Bilstein dampers, Brembo brakes, and Drexler mechanical LSD.
- VXR Blue Edition (2012) — cosmetic/trim package added to the range.
All Corsa D VXRs use a 6-speed M32 manual gearbox, the focus of this article.
Why the M32 is
prone to trouble on the VXR
The M32’s most common weakness is bearing wear at the 5th/6th-gear end of the gearbox. As those bearings wear and pit, you get the classic speed-related whine (often loudest in 5th/6th); if ignored, debris contaminates the oil and accelerates internal wear. Some owners also notice gearstick “wobble” under load and, in advanced cases, difficulty selecting gears.
Track/spirited road use can push gearbox oil temperatures high; once the oil is heat-soaked, it struggles to shed heat, further stressing bearings.
Symptoms owners report
- Whine/rumble with road speed (typically most obvious in 6th, then 5th).
- Notchy selection and gearstick movement under load.
- Difficult gear engagement (worse when hot); in severe cases, risk of jump-out.
- Metallic debris in drained gearbox oil.
Forum threads from the Corsa D community mirror these complaints (whine in higher gears at moderate mileage).
How Eco Torque
fixes M32 issues
Strip & inspect
- Confirm bearing/source of noise; assess synchros, hubs & sleeves; check shafts and end case.
Rebuild with upgraded parts
- Full bearing set (focusing on the 5th/6th end), seals & gaskets, OEM-spec oil.
- Where appropriate, we use the revised end-case upgrade.
Preventive extras while the box is out
- Clutch & DMF inspection/replacement (cost-efficient while the gearbox is removed).
Road test and quality check for temperature-related behaviour under load.
Nürburgring Edition note
The Nürburgring Edition adds chassis hardware (Bilstein/Brembo) and a Drexler LSD for traction, but it still uses the M32; the same bearing-related failure patterns apply.

❓Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ)
Q: Which years of Corsa VXR are affected?
A: The Corsa D VXR (2007–2014) uses the M32 across the run, including special editions like Arctic (2008), Nürburgring (2011) and Blue (2012).
Q: What’s the classic sign of M32 failure?
A: A speed-dependent whine that’s most noticeable in 6th (and 5th). That’s typically bearing wear at the 5th/6th end.
Q: Can I keep driving if it just “sings” a bit?
A: It’ll usually get louder; debris in the oil can escalate internal damage and raise costs. Early intervention saves money.
Q: Do Nürburgring Editions avoid the gearbox issues?
A: No — the Nürburgring upgrades are engine/chassis/LSD; the gearbox is still M32, so the same wear patterns apply.
Q: What’s included in your rebuild?
A: Full bearing/seal set, inspection of synchros/hubs, fresh oil, and recommendations on clutch/DMF while the box is out.
