Introduction
The 0B5 DL501 gearbox, better known as the 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission (DSG), was fitted across a wide range of Audi longitudinal models including the A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, and even performance cars like the S4 and RS5.
This gearbox blends rapid dual-clutch performance with the ability to handle higher torque compared to earlier DSG units. However, as with many advanced transmissions, workshop experience and owner reports highlight a number of recurring issues. At Eco Torque, we regularly rebuild and repair DL501 gearboxes, tackling faults that range from clutch and flywheel wear to mechatronic failures.
Common Issues with the 0B5 DL501
1) Clutch Pack Wear
- Symptoms: Juddering when moving off, slipping under load, harsh gear changes.
- Cause: Wear on the dual-clutch pack, accelerated by stop-start driving and high torque loads.
- Fix: Replacement clutch packs, often performed alongside DMF replacement for long-term reliability.
2) Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) Failure
- Symptoms: Rattling noises at idle, vibration through the drivetrain, poor low-speed driveability.
- Cause: DMF wear or spring fatigue, often found in higher mileage cars.
- Fix: Replace with new DMF (and clutch pack if required).
3) Circuit Board Failure (TCU / Mechatronic Board)
- Symptoms: Gearbox warning lights, erratic shifting, limp mode activation.
- Cause: Internal failure of the mechatronic circuit board – a problem we’ve covered in detail in our previous Eco Torque blog on circuit board faults
- Fix: Replacement of the mechatronic circuit board with updated parts.
4) Mechatronic Unit Failure
- Symptoms: Harsh shifts, failure to engage certain gears, or complete loss of drive.
- Cause: Hydraulic control unit issues within the mechatronic, solenoid malfunctions, or fluid contamination.
- Fix: Strip and replace faulty components or supply complete mechatronic repair kits.
5) G676 Clutch Position Sensor Failure
- Symptoms: Gearbox error messages, harsh engagement, or the vehicle entering limp mode.
- Cause: Failure of the G676 driver position sensor inside the mechatronic, a known weak point in DL501 gearboxes.
- Fix: Replace the sensor or the entire mechatronic circuit board, followed by basic settings and clutch adaptation.
6) 5th Gear & Hub Synchro Wear
- Symptoms: Crunch or notch when selecting 5th gear, occasional gear pop-out.
- Cause: Wear to the synchro hub and sleeve associated with 5th gear.
- Fix: Replacement of worn synchros and hubs during gearbox rebuild.
🚨 Quick Symptoms of
Audi 0B5 DL501 Gearbox Failure
Common Audi 0B5 gearbox symptoms include:
- Juddering or slipping when moving off
- Warning lights and limp mode due to circuit board failure
- Harsh or missed shifts linked to mechatronic issues
- Rattling at idle from DMF wear
- Crunching into 5th gear or difficulty selecting it
Q: What are the common symptoms of Audi 0B5 gearbox failure?
A: Drivers often report juddering and slip from clutch wear, rattling at idle from the DMF, gearbox warning lights from circuit board failure, harsh or missed shifts from mechatronic faults, and crunching into 5th gear due to synchro wear.

Questions (FAQ)
Q: Which cars use the Audi 0B5 DL501 gearbox?
A: It’s found in many Audi longitudinal models including the A4, A5, A6, A7, Q5, S4, and RS5.
Q: What’s the most common problem with the DL501?
A: The most frequently seen issues are clutch wear, DMF failure, and mechatronic circuit board faults.
Q: Can Eco Torque repair the G676 sensor issue?
A: Yes — we replace the sensor located deep in the rear section of transmission which requires specialist tools.
Q: What causes the rattling noise at idle?
A: A worn dual mass flywheel (DMF) is the usual culprit.
Q: Do you supply reconditioned DL501 gearboxes?
A: Unfortunately due to the complexity of these transmissions we can not provide reconditioned units.
