What is CVT fluid and why does it need changing?
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) fluid is the lifeblood of a belt-and-pulley or chain-drive automatic gearbox. It lubricates the variator, belt/chain and pulleys, and provides the hydraulic pressure to control pulley ratio. Degraded CVT fluid causes belt slip, vibration, poor acceleration and ultimately belt failure.
What are the symptoms of low or degraded CVT fluid?
Symptoms include hesitation during acceleration, vibration or shuddering at low speed, a whining or humming noise from the transmission, and a lurching feeling when pulling away. If the fluid is very dark or smells burnt, it needs immediate attention.
How often should CVT fluid be changed?
Most manufacturers recommend a CVT fluid change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, though some specify ‘lifetime fill’. A lifetime fill simply means until a problem occurs — a preventative change every 40,000 miles is strongly recommended to extend CVT life.
How much CVT fluid does my gearbox need?
CVT capacity varies widely by model, typically between 4 and 8 litres. Contact us with your vehicle registration for the correct fill quantity and service procedure specific to your car.
Is this fluid suitable for all CVT gearboxes?
This fluid meets a wide range of OEM CVT specifications. Always verify your vehicle’s specific requirement before purchase. If in doubt, send us your registration and we will confirm compatibility.
