M32 Gearbox Gen 3 Second Gear 41 Tooth – Vauxhall / Alfa Romeo / Fiat

This is an M32 6-speed gearbox second gear with 41 teeth, Vauxhall OE part number 55580384. It is a genuine replacement for the generation 3 M32 gearbox only (2016 model year onwards). The second gear is a commonly replaced item during M32 gearbox rebuilds, particularly after bearing failure, gear chipping, or synchromesh wear. This part is not compatible with M32 Gen 1 or Gen 2 gearboxes.

What is the M32 Gen 3 gearbox and how is it different?

GM revised the M32 gearbox in approximately 2016 to address known weaknesses in earlier versions. The Gen 3 uses redesigned gears with different tooth counts on some ratios, including second gear (41T vs 42T in some earlier variants). Gen 3 gear wheels are NOT interchangeable with Gen 1 or Gen 2.

How do I know if I have an M32 Gen 3 gearbox?

Gen 3 gearboxes are typically found on vehicles from approximately 2016 onwards with the M32 unit. Check your vehicle registration year and the stamped gearbox code. If in doubt, send us your VIN and we will confirm which generation you have.

Why does the second gear wear out?

The M32 second gear synchromesh and gear teeth are frequently subject to wear from aggressive or abrupt gear changes, insufficient gearbox oil, or cascade damage from a bearing failure. The gear can chip or the synchro cone can deteriorate, causing crunching or refusal to select second gear.

Can I fit this gear myself?

Replacing internal M32 gears requires full gearbox disassembly, specialist tools, and knowledge of shimming and bearing preload settings. This is a workshop job. Contact us for advice on rebuild services if needed.
