What are the symptoms of a worn or damaged crown wheel on the M32?

A worn crown wheel typically causes a persistent whining or howling noise that changes with road speed (not engine speed). You may also notice vibration through the floorpan or a sudden increase in noise if a tooth has chipped or broken. In severe cases the final drive may seize or lose drive entirely.

Can the M32 crown wheel be replaced without removing the gearbox?
