What is the Haldex AWD coupling?
The Haldex coupling is an electro-hydraulic unit that distributes drive between the front and rear axles on demand. It contains an internal pump, valve body, clutch pack and control unit, working together to engage the rear axle when traction is needed.
What are the signs of a failing Haldex coupling?
Typical symptoms include AWD fault codes, loss of four-wheel drive grip, unusual droning or clicking noises from the rear axle area, and handling instability in low-grip conditions. Regular oil service at the correct interval reduces the risk of failure.
Is this a new or remanufactured unit?
This is a new BorgWarner (S-TEC) Haldex Gen 5 coupling — the same manufacturer as the OEM unit fitted at the factory to Audi, SEAT, Skoda and VW vehicles.
Does fitting a new Haldex coupling require coding?
Yes. After installation, the coupling and/or its control unit typically requires basic settings and adaptation using VCDS, ODIS or a compatible diagnostic tool. Follow the vehicle workshop manual for the correct procedure.
What service does the Haldex coupling require?
BorgWarner recommends replacing the Haldex oil and filter at the intervals specified by your vehicle manufacturer (typically every 40,000 miles or 3 years). Using the correct OEM-specified oil is essential to protect the clutch pack and pump.
