Man TGE Van 4X4 System Fault | A Quick Guide on the Faults & Fixes

Steven Kay |

Introduction

German truck and bus specialist MAN expanded into the light commercial vehicle market with MAN TGE panel van, a big jump from their usual line of trucks and heavy-goods vehicles. Triggered by the pandemic, the popularity of self-contained holiday vehicles exploded, presenting consumers with an abundance of options ideal for long distance travel and comfortable living spaces.

MAN or VW?

You may already know that the Volkswagen Group owns MAN, so instead of creating a new LCV from scratch, they used the base of a Volkswagen Crafter. A smart choice with a highly efficient production system already in place and used many times before.

Being a mass-produced vehicle, common issues are well known, and this is unfortunately the case with Haldex systems. Faults are common however parts are readily available to get you back on the road!

How Does It Work?

This system is not a permanent four-wheel drive, the drive is distributed to the front wheels and when the system detects slip from the ABS or if heavy acceleration is applied, the rear differential is engaged via the Haldex system.

Haldex is very well known in the VW world and has been installed in various makes and models since the late 90's meaning the issues are very well documented.

Front Wheels Spinning, No 4 Wheel Drive?

Most people do not know there is an issue with their all-wheel-drive system until they need it and find themselves spinning the front wheels whilst remaining stationary.

This is mainly noticed when the vehicle is on a low traction area, i.e. a muddy field, gravel track etc. The vehicle attempts to move and loses traction, with no drive being delivered to the rear wheels when needed.

There are many reasons the system might not be working, however the most common is pump failure. This normally happens due to a lack of servicing on the differential and a contamination build up that destroys the pump. Most issues can be resolved by performing a Haldex oil change and service on your vehicle, which should be carried out every 20,000 miles on average.

Common Fault Codes/Symptoms
  • P16671
  • P16670
  • P16668
  • Blocked Filter Gauze
  • No Output From Pump

Top Tip!

Servicing is key! As with most mechanical components, regular maintenance can be the difference between a long life span or a complete headache. These pumps can and do still fail with a good service history, however from our experience this is substantially less than non-serviced models.

Changing the Haldex oil every 20'000 miles can decrease pump failure rate and can easily be included in your regular motor service schedule.
