Replacement securing clip (snap ring) for the 5th speed gear assembly in the VW 085 manual gearbox. This circlip retains the 5th gear on the shaft and prevents axial movement. An essential small part during any 085 5th gear rebuild.

What does the 5th gear securing clip do?
The securing clip is a circlip or snap ring that locks the 5th gear assembly in position on the layshaft. Without it, the gear can walk axially and disengage under load.
How do I know if this clip has failed?
A dislodged or broken securing clip will cause 5th gear to pop out under load, produce rattling noise from the gearbox, or result in total loss of 5th gear.
Should I replace this clip during a 5th gear rebuild?
Yes — always replace the securing clip when rebuilding the 5th gear assembly. They are inexpensive insurance against re-entry of the gearbox.
Is special tooling needed to fit this clip?
Circlip pliers are required to compress and install snap rings correctly. Using substitute tools can damage the clip or the shaft groove.
