Repair kit to eliminate axial input shaft play on the VW / Audi 02M and 02Q 6-speed manual gearbox — the smaller 79.35mm end cap variant. Axial play in the input shaft is a common fault on this gearbox and causes creeping in gear, difficulty selecting 1st or reverse, and can lead to gearbox failure if left uncorrected. This kit allows the repair to be carried out through the front left wheel arch without removing the gearbox on most models.

• 3 x 0.65mm input shaft shims (part number WHT001976)

Note: Not all shims may be required — the number used depends on the amount of measured shaft movement. This kit will not fit models with a metal end casing. Check your end cap size before ordering — if your end cap is 84.5mm, you need ETB2468 instead.

What causes input shaft play on the 02M / 02Q gearbox?

The plastic end cap on the 02M / 02Q gearbox nose can wear or distort over time, allowing axial (in-and-out) play to develop in the input shaft. This causes the symptoms listed above and must be corrected to prevent further damage.

How do I know which end cap size I need?

The two cap sizes are 79.35mm (small) and 84.5mm (large). Measure your existing cap or contact us with your registration/VIN. The 84.5mm variant is ET reference ETB2468.

Can this be fitted without removing the gearbox?

Yes — on most models this repair can be done through the front left wheel arch. The input shaft will need shimming from inside the gearbox via the cap aperture if the gearbox does not have the plastic end cap fitted.

Will this repair permanently fix the shaft play?

Yes. Fitting the correct shim pack brings the shaft back into the specified axial clearance and eliminates the play. The number of shims used depends on the measured play in your specific unit.

Do I need any special tools?

A dial gauge or similar measuring tool is needed to quantify the existing shaft play so you can select the right number of shims. A basic set of hand tools is sufficient for the cap removal and refitting.
