What causes 5th gear wear in the 02K gearbox?

High-speed motorway use accelerates wear on 5th gear. Incorrect oil level or using the wrong specification fluid are also common causes.

What are the symptoms of a worn 5th speed gear?

A whining or grinding noise that appears at motorway speeds and disappears when you take the car out of 5th gear is the classic sign. Gear jump-out (the lever popping out of 5th) can also occur in advanced cases.

Do I need to replace both 5th speed gears together?

Yes — it is strongly recommended to replace the left (40T) and right (34T) gears as a matched pair. Mismatched wear causes rapid damage to the new gear.
