What is the difference between the left and right 5th speed gear?

The right gear (34T, this item) is the driving gear on the mainshaft; the left gear (40T, ET2564) is the driven gear on the layshaft. They must be replaced together when either shows wear.

What symptoms indicate a failing 5th speed gear?

A whining or growling noise in 5th gear that disappears in other gears, or a tendency for the lever to pop out of 5th under acceleration, are the primary indicators of gear tooth wear.

Can I replace just one gear?

No — it is not recommended. The two gears wear together, and fitting a new gear against a worn counterpart will rapidly damage the new part. Replace both the 34T and 40T gears at the same time.

Is this compatible with the 02K-coded gearbox?

Yes — this part replaces OE reference 020311361T and is designed for the 02K 5-speed gearbox used across VW Group vehicles including the Golf, Bora, A3 and Octavia.
