Technical Data Sheet
What is 75w80 gear oil used for?
SAE 75w80 is a medium-weight fully synthetic gear oil used in manual gearboxes, transaxles and some transfer cases. The 75w cold rating ensures good flow at startup, while the 80 rating provides a protective oil film under operating temperature. It is typically specified by VAG, BMW, Ford and other European manufacturers.
What are the symptoms of degraded manual gearbox oil?
Symptoms include stiff or notchy gear selection, difficulty engaging certain gears when cold, grinding or crunching during gear changes, and whining or rumbling noises from the gearbox. Regular oil changes prevent premature synchroniser and bearing wear.
How often should manual gearbox oil be changed?
Most manufacturers recommend a manual gearbox oil change every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. In high-stress applications such as towing or performance driving, more frequent changes are advisable. Some makers specify ‘lifetime fill’ which should be treated as a 60,000-mile service interval in practice.
Is 75w80 the same as 75w90?
No. The number after the “w” denotes viscosity at operating temperature. A 75w80 is slightly thinner than a 75w90 at running temperature. Using the wrong viscosity can affect gear change quality and gearbox longevity. Always use the grade specified by your vehicle manufacturer.
How much gear oil does a manual gearbox typically hold?
Most manual gearboxes hold between 1.5 and 3 litres. A 5-litre container is suitable for multiple vehicles or for gearboxes with larger capacity. Contact us with your registration to confirm the correct fill quantity.
