Symptoms & why replace

In the 722.6 the electrohydraulic control unit joins its electrical components to the vehicle wiring harness and the transmission control module through a 13-pin plug connector with a bayonet lock, and both input speed sensors are part of the electrical conductor plate.

When a car comes in with erratic or harsh shifts and many trouble codes stored in the control module, a trade article reports that a Mercedes-Benz bulletin says to look for oil in the electrical connector on the front left of the gearbox. The harness connects to the conductor plate through a pilot bushing with two O-rings, and when those leak, oil fills the connector cavity and travels through the wiring harness up to the control module.

On a critical fault the control module switches to limp-home mode: the last engaged gear stays engaged, the modulating and shift pressures rise to their maximum, and the torque converter lock-up clutch is deactivated.
