How do I know if my 3rd gear has 49 or 47 teeth?

You must physically count the teeth on the gear with the gearbox open. There are no external markings or diagrams. If your vehicle is a GTI or S3 variant, see the full repair kit ETB3743A which uses GTI-specification synchro rings.

What are the symptoms of 3rd gear failure on the DQ200?

A crunching or grinding noise when engaging 3rd gear, difficulty selecting 3rd, or jump-out from 3rd under load are the main symptoms. The selector fork and synchro hub should also be inspected for wear when replacing the gear.

Should I replace the synchro rings at the same time?
