VAG Terminology Guide - Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW Reference Guide

Steven Kay |

Introduction

Below is a quick reference guide for those of you who may not be familiar with the terminology associated with VAG vehicles. If there's something missing that you'd like to see, leave a comment, and we'll add it to the blog!

VAG

Volkswagen Audi Group is the main company that 10 different car brands sit under including Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW.

ODIS

The ODIS VW Group Diagnostic Tool is an all-in-one powerhouse for key programming, ECU and control unit replacement, software updates, and accessing essential technical bulletins (TPI). It also grants full access to workshop manuals and wiring diagrams—basically everything but the coffee machine!

VAG Part Numbers

Since this section is quite large, we’ll keep it brief. For those who want a deep dive (or need help falling asleep), there are plenty of detailed guides available online.

VAG uses an efficient part numbering system where each component type is given a prefix code.

VW Part Numbers

As shown in the image, all the components start with “02T”, identifying the main component. This is why transmissions are often referred to by codes like “0AM” or “02E” – these serve as easy reference points for gearbox identification.

Gearbox Codes & References

  • DSG: The German abbreviation for Direktschaltgetriebe which translates to Direct Shift Gearbox. This term refers to all dual-clutch transmissions found in Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW vehicles.
  • Common references, such as “DQ200” and “DL381”, often appear online when discussing DSG gearboxes.
  • These codes can be broken down further to explain their specific meanings.

Gearbox Type

D - Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
M - Manual Gearbox
A - Automatic
V - Multitronic / CVT

Gearbox Orientation

Q - This is a transverse mounted gearbox which is a common set up for most front wheel drive vehicles.
L – This is a longitudinal gearbox and is mounted length-ways in the vehicle. Usually seen on larger transmissions for higher engine power applications.

Power Capability

The last set of numbers are the manufacturers recommended torque capacity in which the gearbox can work with. However, the vehicles they are fitted to often exceed this last number.
