What does a clutch release bearing do?

The clutch release bearing (throw-out bearing) acts on the clutch diaphragm spring when the pedal is pressed, disengaging the clutch and allowing gear changes. When it fails, you may hear a grinding or squealing noise as the clutch pedal is depressed.

What are the symptoms of a worn clutch release bearing?

A whirring, rattling or grinding noise when the clutch pedal is depressed — but not when released — is the primary sign. Other symptoms include a vibrating pedal or difficulty changing gears. The bearing should be replaced promptly.

Is it worth replacing the clutch release bearing on its own?

As the clutch must be removed to access the release bearing, it is generally recommended to replace the complete clutch kit at the same time to avoid a repeat job. However, if the clutch plate and pressure plate are in good condition, bearing-only replacement is possible.

Does this bearing fit all Fiat and Alfa Romeo gearboxes?
