Fiat FPT Dry Dual Clutch Gearbox
The Fiat DDCT C635 gearbox is one of a growing number of dual clutch transmissions being installed on modern vehicles today. With this setup being the preferred choice of manufacturers because of the improvement in fuel economy, it is believed that dual clutch gearboxes will be in 70% of all vehicles in the next 10 years.
Common DDCT C635 Faults
The main reason we see the Fiat DDCT C635 gearbox here at Eco Torque is clutch failure. While 95% of the time this is not an actual issue as such, but just general wear and tear at an acceptable mileage, there are some occasions that we see them on low mileage. As with all dual clutch replacements, these components require a specialist tool to install and shim them correctly. If this is not done the clutch pack, at best, will have a considerably reduced lifespan, however more often than not the vehicle will not operate correctly straight away.
This also has a strong chance of damaging other components if not installed correctly.
Fiat FPT DDCT C635 Dual Clutch Gearbox
The one major issue we are seeing with this transmission is over-shimming from the factory. Not on the clutch pack but the main gear shaft inside the gearbox. We have seen a Jeep Renegade in with only 13,000 miles on the gearbox and the over-shimming damage is pictured below.
Fiat Dual Clutch Gearbox Bearing Failure
As you can see, the over-shimmed gear shaft has been so tight that the taper roller bearing has completely collapsed. This produced a distinctive whining sound whilst the vehicle is in motion. A full re-shim of the gearbox and replacement bearings are required to rectify the fault.
If you think your vehicle might be suffering from this fault and as with all gearbox issues, it is best to get it looked at straight away as it could save the customer substantial amounts on their repair bill.
