Dashboard warning message: "Error Workshop! Only leave vehicle in P position!"
What it means and what to do next.
One advantage of modern cars is also a potential drawback: sensors. With almost every element of the vehicle’s components controlled, monitored and double checked by sensors, it unfortunately leaves the car with simply more to go wrong.
Fortunately, this one has the potential to be an easier fix.
It is worth mentioning that warning messages on the dashboard can also be very general. Any gearbox warning error could mean a fault with one of a hundred different components. So, a warning message like that does not mean just one thing.
However, with the “Error Workshop! Only leave vehicle in P position!” Dashboard Fault message, it narrows down to a few options.
What to do next.
Don’t panic, but don’t ignore.
- Contact your trusted mechanic or find a transmission specialist.
- Scan the vehicle. This should always be the first step after speaking to an expert and will give you key information on what is causing the issue.
- Software updates. Software rarely causes a fault, and updates are even less likely to cure them for that matter, however it eliminates this unlikely cause and is sometimes required when fitting components that are updated or modified to rectify a common issue.
Once other factors and components are reasonably ruled out, then a common failing part can be looked at.
The fault code that should be present with this issue is: B116229 (selector lever park position lock switch implausible signal).
This fault code will be stored in either the steering wheel electronics module (J527) or the vehicle central electrical system (J519).
The Selector Park Switch.
Located inside the vehicle and part of the selector module itself. The original switch is a contact point on a printed circuit board.
This is part of the complete module and doesn’t currently have a viable repair option. As such, a retro fit repair part has been produced by the manufacturer, the park micro switch.
There are currently two versions available and which one you need is decided by the colour of your selector module in the vehicle (Black or White).
You will need to remove the gator or panelling around the selector module and confirm which unit you require before purchasing.
The micro switch screws directly into the module, with one end of the loom connecting to the module and the other to the harness.
Some versions of the switch also require an adapter piece which adds to the underside of the selector knob, preventing the gator from jamming inside the switch when in operation. This currently seems to be with the white version of the switch and can be purchased on our online store via the parts list below.

White Switch (ET3506)
