DPS6 Ford Powershift TCM Failure - A Guide to Control Module Issues

Steven Kay |

The Ford Dual Clutch Transmission, also known as the Powershift is well known due to its reputation for failure. This fault relates to the transmission control module (TCM) on the DPS6 dry clutch system. If you are experiencing, rough jerky gear shifts, error messages on the dashboard, or complete loss of drive, this article may be relevant to you.

DPS6 Transmission

The gearbox we are referring to is the dry clutch version of Ford double clutch transmission. This gearbox differs from its larger brother the MPS6 Powershift, in that the clutches are dry and are not submerged in oil. This gearbox is on smaller engine models like the Ford Focus, Fiesta and B-Max to name a few.
Another big difference between the 6DCT250 and the larger MPS6 is the transmission control unit. This dry clutch version has an externally mounted TCM which drives electric motors to operate components like clutches and gears. The MPS6 however, utilises hydraulic oil pressure from its internally mounted position via a valve-body and solenoids.

6DCT250 Problems

Common issues with the dry clutch Powershift include:

• Clutch wear/failure
• Input shaft oil leak
• Wiring harness failure
• Clutch actuator motor electrical error
• TCM failure

In this article we will focus specifically on the TCM failure.

TCM Failure Symptoms

As the module is the brains of the gearbox, faults can manifest in many ways, such as:

• Jerky gear changes
• Excessive revving and delayed upshift
• Complete loss of drive
• Clutch sensor faults

Driving errors can also occur where no fault codes are present on the vehicle, making it seem that there is nothing wrong with the transmission. These are the most difficult to diagnose and often lead technicians down an incorrect diagnosis route.

Transmission Control Module Replacement

The good news is that the module can be replaced. The unit requires specialised software to transfer the vehicle's original software from the old unit to the new one.

This sometimes requires connecting to the circuit board directly to retrieve the data from the EPROM and should only be entrusted to an experienced professional.

After the vehicle data is loaded onto the new module, the unit can be installed with basic settings, followed by completing an adaptation procedure on the vehicle. There are occasions that the clutch pack is so badly worn that this procedure cannot be completed, resulting in a required clutch replacement.
